Lauralee Alben

As an internationally respected designer, speaker, and author, Lauralee Alben is a recognized champion of the human spirit.  Lauralee is the president of Alben Design  and the founder of the Sea Change Design Consortium.  She consults with organizations and coaches leaders in designing change that fosters integrity, innovation, and sustainability.  Regarded as a thought leader at the intersection of design, business, and society, Lauralee gives keynotes to companies including Procter & Gamble, Sun, Intel, and Adobe.  She also speaks at prestigious professional conferences including TED (Technology, Entertainment, and Design), ad:tech, the Design Management Institute's International Conference, and the NSF Executive Symposium on Leadership in Design and Innovation, and the The Montessori Foundation & The International Montessori Council's Annual West Coast Conference on Partnership and Montessori Education. Because of Lauralee's commitment to bridge the professional and academic worlds, she has lectured at many schools and universities including Yale, Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, and her alma mater, Rhode Island School of Design.

In 2005, Lauralee and Riane Eisler met at the Women's Forum for the Economy and Society in Deauville, France, where they were both speaking at the inaugural conference.  Since then, both their friendship and professional relationship has continued to develop in many meaningful ways. Lauralee has developed a keynote and workshop called "Born to Create" that focuses on women leaders and their unique ways of creating, collaborating, and leading that have a profound influence on business, society, and the environment.  This keynote features Riane Eisler and the design of her life, work, and legacy.  Here's an excerpt: "Riane, like the ancient weavers and spinners of cloth in most ancient mythologies, carries forward the legacy of the 'female deities who, like the Greek Fates, are still said to spin the destinies of 'men.'  Riane's warp is partnership, her weft the world, and the fabric she weaves wholeness."

In Lauralee's consulting engagements and workshops, she uses an innovative, holistic approach, called The Sea Change Design Process (SM), to enable individuals and organizations to design positive, profound, and lasting transformations in their lives, work, and the world.  A pioneer of the Creative Economy, Lauralee Alben has consulted with two of the world's most innovative companies: Apple Computer, where she helped define personalized computing; and Procter & Gamble, where she led a culture change within a research and development group that shifted inertia into a sustainable innovation capability.  Lauralee has also consulted on global issues, from inspiring ocean conservation for the Monterey Bay Aquarium to searching for new ways to protect human rights in Uzbekistan.

Lauralee received the first prestigious Muriel Cooper Prize from the Design Management Institute for being a pioneer in the digital environment and is one of I.D. Magazine's I.D. Forty: "one of the most influential people in design."  Lauralee's articles have appeared in many computer, design and business publications.  The Design Management Journal has published several, including "Navigating a Sea Change" and the inspiring series of design stories called, "At the heart of interaction design".  She has created a DVD called "Designing a Life Worth Living" and is currently working on a book by the same title.

Testimonials

"Lauralee proved to be one of the most thought provoking speakers in the entire history of the conference. We really hit one out of the park by getting her!"

Cindy Currie, InterChange 2000

"In a celebration of the human spirit and individual creativity...
Lauralee tells parables... . Her theme is that interactivity is about designing 'the experience of being alive.' And through her stories that are all about being alive, she is able to distill the [human] qualities critical to an effective interactive design process: heart, passion, truth, common sense, discovery, and vision."

Thomas Walton, Editor of the Design Management Journal

"Lauralee made a wonderful presentation to mark the conclusion of our formal program at the NSF Executive Symposium on Leadership in Design and Innovation. There was no way of my expecting, much less of planning, an end on such a high note. What magic!"

Nirmal Sethia, Ph.D., Professor, Management & Human Resources, College of Business Administration, California State Polytechnic University

"I heard Lauralee speak when I was a graduate student at Rochester Institute of Technology, and her philosophies on design and the quality of experience are ones that have influenced me as a designer, serving as a model for my own creative process and design. I think it's great that there are designers out there that are using their talents for more than commercial means on a daily basis. Thank you."
